Galesburg, IL –  A senior member of the men’s basketball team set a new all-time mark for career 3-point baskets during Tuesday night’s loss at Grinnell College.

Prairie Fire shooting guard Ben Wetherbee (Sydney, Australia, Woodstock) broke the record after he knocked down three 3-pointers against the Pioneers and finished the evening with 12 points.

Wetherbee entered the game tied for the most 3-point field goals in the history of the men’s basketball program with former Knox sharpshooter and Williamsfield native Reggie Bowman, who played between 2000 and 2004 and finished with 184 triples.

Wetherbee became the career leader in made 3s when he sank a shot from beyond the arc with 6:29 to play in the first half.  He added two more in the second half to increase his career total to 187.

“It’s a credit to his craft,” Knox coach Rob Purlee said.  “The ability to shoot the basketball is what’s separated Ben from the pack all along.  It couldn’t happen to a better kid.”

Wetherbee also owns the men’s basketball record for highest free throw percentage in a season after he shot 97.7 percent during the 2010-11 campaign.

“(Ben) has a great attitude and our program is better because he’s in it,” Purlee said.

Wetherbee is closing in on another milestone.  He needs 73 points in the Prairie Fire’s five remaining games for 1,000 in his career.
