Track and Field: Men 8th, Women 9th at MWC Championships

Meet results in 20 new all-time top ten outdoor track & field entries

2012 Midwest Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at St. Norbert College

Day 2: May 12

DePere, WI - The Knox men's and women's teams combined for seven top five finishes and several new additions to the outdoor track and field record books at the conference meet.

The Prairie Fire men, after finishing Friday’s events in second place, tallied 42 total points and placed eighth overall.  After the top four teams, the standings were extremely close with the fifth through ninth place teams separated by a mere 15.5 points.

The Knox men had five top five performances, led by junior Jonas Mack (Algonquin, IL, Cary-Grove) with a second place medal in the javelin.  His throw of 49.46 meters, or 162' 3", was an improvement of more than 17 meters over his previous personal best and ranks fourth on the all-time performance and all-time individual lists in the javelin.

Mack also had season-best performances in the long jump and the 100 meter dash at the conference meet.

Sophomore Gabe Moreno (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg) medaled with a third place finish in the 10K and placed fourth in the 5K run. Moreno's 5K time of 15:36.57 ranks third on the all-time performance and individual lists.

Junior Sean Choate (Chicago, IL, Chicago Academy) was fifth in the 10K and sophomore Weston Chenoweth (Canton, IL, Canton) placed fifth in the javelin.

Two members of the men’s team scored in two individual events.  Chenoweth placed seventh in the shot put and junior Joe Puntoriero (Cheektowaga, New York, Cleveland Hill) was sixth in the long jump and seventh in the 400 meter run.  Puntoriero's jump of 22' 3 1/2" is sixth on the all-time performance list and fourth all-time by an individual.

Mack and Puntoriero were part of the 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams that placed sixth and seventh, respectively.  The two other runners in the 4x100 were sophomore Aramis McGinty (Colorado Springs, CO, Mesa Ridge) and first-year Jamar Herbert (Arvada, CO, Pomona).  Running a leg in the 4x400 with Mack and Puntoriero were sophomores Bobby Mueller (Woodridge, IL, Downers Grove South) and Matt Brongo (Eureka, IL, Eureka).

Senior Tony Sickley (LaSalle, IL, LaSalle-Peru), who placed sixth in the shot put, was one of three men's field event performers to significantly improve their career-best efforts in the hammer throw and etch their names in the record book. 

Junior Dan Johnson (Chicago, IL, Loyola) had the team's top throw of 138' 10" to move into seventh on the all-time performance list and second on the all-time individual list.  His previous best was 123' 3".  Sickley's throw of 131' shattered his previous long heave of 116' 10" and is tied for 10th on the all-time performance list and third on all-time individual list.  Junior Paul Lebryk (Glenview, IL, Glenbrook South) improved his previous top distance of 110' 11" with a throw of 129' to rank fourth on the all-time individual list.

Monmouth College placed first in the men's team standings with 230 points.  Host St. Norbert College was second with 135 followed by Carroll University in third with 115 and Ripon College fourth with 73.  Grinnell College (25.5), Lawrence University (50), Illinois College (44.5), Knox, and Beloit College (37) rounded out the field.

The Prairie Fire women's team added 14 points on Saturday and finished in ninth place with 16 total points.  The squad had two top five finishes and one of the fastest times on record in a sprint event.

Sophomore Catie McLaughlin (Roscoe, IL, Hononegah) was fourth in the javelin with her throw of 103' 9" for an eighth place ranking on the all-time performance list and sixth on the all-time individual list for the event.   Senior Emma Swanson (West Des Moines, IA, Valley) placed fifth in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:07.84 and also scored in the 100 meter hurdles.  Her time of 16.82 seconds in the 100 meter hurdle prelims ranks fifth on the all-time individual list. 

McLaughlin placed seventh to earn the team points in the discus.  Her throw of 119' 7" is fifth on the all-time individual list.  She added her name to the all-time individual list in the shot put too with a distance of 32' 3 3/4" that ranks ninth.

Senior Kristi Weller (Cullom, IL, Tri-Point) ran a preliminary time in the 100 meters of 12.84 seconds, which ranks #3 on both the all-time performance and all-time individual lists, to advance to the finals and score.  In addition, Weller finished the 200 meters in 27.04 seconds, which is seventh on the all-time individual list.

Another new entry on the all-time individual list belongs to sophomore Sophia Mwuara (Santa Fe, NM, Santa Fe Prep).  She recorded a hammer throw diatance of 114' 4" that easily surpassed her previous career-long of 99' 6" for third on the list.

Monmouth College won the women's championship with 250.5 points.  St. Norbert College was second with 111.5, five points ahead of third place Carroll (106.5) University.  Illinois College (96) was fourth, Grinnell College (86) fifth, Ripon College (58.5) sixth, Lawrence University (30) seventh, and Beloit College (25) placed eighth.

Day 1: May 11

DePere, WI - The Prairie Fire men’s team is in second place while the women’s team has some work to do to move up in the team standings after the first day of the conference meet.

The men’s team has 30 points, with less than 10 points separating the second through sixth place teams.  The women’s team had two points on the first day.

Original results from the scorekeeper had the Knox men with 30 points and in fifth place, just five points out of second.  Corrected results sent out later Friday night had the Fire men’s team with 30 points and in second place.

Among the top performances was a second place in the javelin by junior Jonas Mack (Algonquin, IL, Cary-Grove) and a third place in the 10K by sophomore Gabe Moreno (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg).
