Galesburg, IL - The Prairie Fire returns four golfers from last season’s squad that placed sixth at the Midwest Conference Women’s Golf Championships.
The team will be led by interim head coach Rielly Parungao, who has worked as an assistant golf professional at Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg. A Monmouth College graduate, he played golf all four years for the Fighting Scots. Parungao will also assist with the Knox men’s golf team.
Senior Mia Savard (Menifee, CA, Paloma Valley) finished eighth in the individual standings, earning a medal and all-conference recognition.
Savard’s strong season included three top 10 placements, including a pair of second place finishes, and an average round score of 94.0. She was second at the Grinnell College Invitational after shooting a career low 83 -- just one stroke behind the tournament champion -- on October 1, 2011. She also placed second after carding an 84 during the spring season at the Augustana College Invitational on April 19, 2012.
The team’s other senior, Monica Price (Rochester, IL, Rochester), has been a consistent player and is poised to have a good year on the links. Price had the low score for the Prairie Fire at the Central College Fall Invitational last September.
Juniors Sarah Martin (Crown Point, IN, Merrillville) and Lizzy Rodgers (Homewood, IL, Homewood-Flossmoor) round out Knox’s fall roster. Both women showed improvement last season and look to continue that this year.
The Prairie Fire’s season begins at the Mount Mercy Fall Invite on August 31 and September 1 in Marion, Iowa.
The squad hosts a fall tournament in 2012. The Prairie Fire and more than a dozen teams will take to the course at Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg on September 7 beginning at 12:00 p.m. in the Knox Invitational.
