Beloit, WI – The Prairie Fire teams combined for eleven top five finishes, including a first place effort that set a new record at the host venue, during the Beloit Relays on Friday and Saturday.
Senior Sean Choate (Chicago, IL, Chicago Academy) won the 5000 meter run in a time of 16:06.19. Besides placing first in the race, Choate broke the record in the 5K at Karris Track that he set last year. First-year Brian Cole (Warson Woods, MO, Webster Groves) also scored for Knox in the 5000 meters.
In another long distance race, first-year Victor Schultz (Staunton, VA, Robert E Lee) finished second in the 10,000 meter run.
Senior Joe Puntoriero (Cheektowaga, New York, Cleveland Hill) had a big day with three top five finishes individually and helped two relay teams place in the top five as well.
Puntoriero finished second in the 100 meter dash and the long jump, and placed third in the 200 meter dash. He also ran a leg on the Prairie Fire men’s third place 4x100 meter relay team and the fifth place 4x400 meter relay team.
Joining Puntoriero in the 4x100 were first-year Sam Reading (Tennessee, IL, West Prairie), junior Matt Brongo (Eureka, IL, Eureka), and senior Jonas Mack (Algonquin, IL, Cary-Grove). Puntoriero, Brongo, Mack, and junior Bobby Mueller (Woodridge, IL, Downers Grove South) took part in the 4x400 relay.
Mack posted a second place finish in the javelin with a throw of 155’ 8” that ranks #10 on the all-time top ten performance list. Junior Weston Chenoweth (Canton, IL, Canton) was fifth in the javelin and added a second top five finish by placing fourth in the shot put.
The men’s team established three additional all-time top ten marks, all in the hammer throw, at Beloit.
Senior Dan Johnson (Chicago, IL, Luther South) placed seventh with a throw of 140’ 7” that ranks #8 on the all-time performance list.
Senior Paul Lebryk (Glenview, IL, Glenbrook South) and junior Tim Worrell (Wataga, IL, ROWVA) established personal-best distances in the hammer. Lebryk’s throw of 132’ 10” is #3 on the all-time individual list. Worrell topped his previous best (122’ 10”) by nearly six feet when his throw landed 128’ 9” away for #5 on the all-time individual list.
Junior Devin Compton (Aurora, IL, West Aurora) added points for the Prairie Fire men’s team with an eighth place finish in the shot put.
The Knox men scored 90 total points and placed fourth out of nine teams. St. Ambrose University, an NAIA school, won the men’s meet with 227 points. Host Beloit College (154) was second and Carroll University (118) finished third. Judson University (65) placed fifth behind Knox in the men’s standings.
The Prairie Fire women’s squad was led by first-year Carolina Goncalves (Chicago, IL, Walter Payton Prep), who placed third in the 800 meter run.
Goncalves also ran in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams that scored points for Knox. Juniors Yetunde Durotoye (Lagos, Nigeria, Loyola Jesuit College) and Danielle Erikson (Mokena, IL, Lincoln-Way East) and sophomore Colleen Shelly (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg) took part in the 4x100. The 4x400 lineup besides Goncalves was Durotoye along with first-years Catlin Watts (Chicago, IL, Whitney Young) and Shelby Holdener (Murray, UT, Alta).
Shelly added points with a seventh place finish in the 400 meter hurdles and first-year Mickella Duffy-Webb (Colorado Springs, CO, William J Palmer) scored by placing eighth in the 5000 meter run.
The Prairie Fire women’s team totaled 15 points to finish eighth out of 10 teams. St. Ambrose was first with 195 points to sweep the meets. Augustana College (181.5) was second, Judson (120.5) finished third, Beloit (114) fourth, and Carroll (100) fifth.
The Knox track and field teams participate in the Fighting Scot Open at Monmouth College on May 4 at 11:00 before the Midwest Conference Championships begin a week later at Beloit College.
