2014 Midwest Conference Men's Golf Championships
May 1-3 at Aldeen Golf Club – Rockford, ILRound Three Recap   (East Peoria, IL, Metamora), who closed within one stroke of the lead with a second round 75, fired a 75 again in the third round and won the league's individual title with a three-day score of 228 – four strokes ahead of runner-up Henry Mulvey of Carroll University.
Fenner also received All-Midwest Conference accolades for the third time in his career.
Knox finished seventh in the team standings with a score of 1080 after carding a 352 on Saturday.
Monmouth College won the team championship after trailing by two strokes going into the final round. The Scots shot 315 in round three and 953 overall to finish nine strokes ahead of second place Carroll University (962).
Defending champion St. Norbert College finished third at 969 followed by Lawrence University (1005), Grinnell College (1014), and Illinois College (1025).
Fenner joins Bobby Steubi '12 as recent Midwest Conference individual champions from Knox.Â
Steubi won the title in 2012, when Fenner finished in a tie for sixth as a sophomore and became a first-time all-conference selection.
Junior
Matt Gordon (Elk Gove Village, IL, Elk Grove) shot 91 in the third round and finished with a score of 271. Seniors
Ben Schlotter (Chambersburg, PA, Cumberland Valley Christian) and
Mackinzie Chapman (Sheffield, IL, Annawan) posted scores of 92 and 94, respectively, on the last day of the championships. Schlotter closed at 288 and Chapman 293.
Monmouth coach Dave Ragone was named MWC coach of the year by a vote of the league's coaches.
Round Two RecapThe Prairie Fire didn't gain any ground in the team standings in the second round, but individually it's a different story altogether.
Knox senior
James Fenner (East Peoria, IL, Metamora) moved up to second place with a 75 on Friday and is position to win a conference championship with his 36-hole score of 153.
Fenner began the day in a five-way tie for fourth place after shooting 78 on Thursday. He trailed first round leader Cody Neu of Carroll University by six strokes. Neu followed up his even-par 72 on the first day with an 82 in the second round and sits in third place, one stroke behind Fenner.
Neu's teammate, Henry Mulvey, fired a 74 in the second round and is the tournament leader going into the final day at 152. Six golfers are within five strokes of Mulvey.
The Prairie Fire shot a 358 in the second round and are stuck in seventh place with a two-day score of 728, well behind sixth place Grinnell College (673).
St. Norbert College, vying for a second straight conference title in men's golf, moved into the lead with the low round of 312. St. Norbert (636) owns a one-stroke lead over Carroll (637), which won back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012. Monmouth College (638) is only two strokes off the pace after a second round 314 while Illinois College (672) and Lawrence University (672) are tied for fourth place.
Junior
Matt Gordon (Elk Gove Village, IL, Elk Grove) posted a second round 92 and is at 180 for Knox after 36 holes. Â Senior
Ben Schlotter (Chambersburg, PA, Cumberland Valley Christian) is at 196 (95-101) and senior
Mackinzie Chapman (Sheffield, IL, Annawan) 199 (109-90).
The third and final round of the championships is Saturday and begins at 10:00 a.m.

Senior
James Fenner (East Peoria, IL, Metamora), a two-time All-Midwest Conference honoree, fired a 78 for the Prairie Fire in the opening round and is tied for fourth place with four other golfers.
The individual leader is Carroll University's Cody Neu, who shot an even-par 72 for a three-stroke lead over his closest challenger.
Knox is in seventh place out of seven teams after carding a 370. The Prairie Fire trail sixth place Grinnell College (339) by 31 strokes.
Carroll closed out the round with score of 318, six strokes ahead of Monmouth College (324) and defending champion St. Norbert College (324). Lawrence University (335) is in fourth place followed by Illinois College (336) in fifth.
The second round of the championships begins Friday at 9:00 a.m.
