Swimming at Knox offers athletes a chance to be a part of a rising program at the school, one that has seen the team grow each of the past several years. Knox swimmers are a dedicated group and are known as one of the hardest working teams on campus. The state-of-the-art E. & L. Andrew Fitness Center is a draw for the swim team, giving the swimmers one of the best training facilities in the entire Midwest.
Being a swimmer at Knox offers an opportunity for competition within a supportive team environment, one that features great team chemistry. In addition to that environment, swimmers have the opportunity to compete against some of the top programs in the nation and measure their success.
With the increased level of competition, winning the conference championship remains one of the Prairie Fire's yearly goals. In 2010, Bess Cooley '12 became the 200 yard breaststroke Midwest Conference Champion, setting a new school record with her time of 2:28.64.
Several Prairie Fire swimmers have gone on to a wide variety of successful careers. They include Deborah Lindel '78 (Biology, Chemistry), an environmental chemist at Orange County Sanitation Districts in Long Beach, California. Bradley Milton '78 (Mathematics) is a architect and partner at RDG Planning & Design in Omaha, Nebraska. John Martin '69 (Economics) is a professor of psychology at San Diego State University. Cynthia Waddell '87 (French) is the head swim coach at North Valley High School in Reno, Nevada. Cynthia Babington '81 (Russian) is the dean of students at DePauw University.
