In the sport of track and field Frank Whiteside distinguished himself on a national level. While at Lombard College he earned three varsity letters. His specialties were the long jump and triple jump, while also competing in hurdle events. He was captain of the track team his senior year and went on to serve as assistant coach for three years. Mr. Whiteside donated over sixty of his medals and trophies that he earned while competing at Lombard college to the Fifty Year Club.
After his freshman year in 1924 he qualified for the final tryouts for the U.S. Olympic team in both the long and triple jump. Certificates for first place in the long jump and third place in the triple jump have been given to the Fifty Year Club. Despite these impressive finishes, he did not compete in the Olympics. He again qualified for final tryouts in 1928 and finished in third place in the long jump.
Frank Whiteside went on to teach for thirty-two years. During this time he taught English, coached athletic teams, and was a debate coach. He then became Branch and district Manager for the Dallas Division of Encyclopedia Britanica, and finally formed his own company, Whiteside Enterprises, which held three patents at the time of his death in 1986.
