James (J.) Charles Janes graduated from Knox in 1955 after a stellar wrestling career. The two-year team captain won conference championships during his junior and senior seasons. He is one of only a handful of Knox wrestlers to compete at the NCAA National Tournament.
Jim led the Knox wrestling team to its first undefeated season in 1955. That same year, he qualified for the NCAA National Tournament at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He won his first-round match at 130 pounds before losing in the second round. Undefeated in two years of Midwest Conference competition, Jim’s only losses came at the National Tournament.
In nominating Jim, the Reverend Dr. Charles “Pete” Hosutt said, “Though a quiet, intellectual religion/philosophy major, when Jim entered the mat, he was a fierce competitor. His success encouraged the rest of us to become more disciplined in our efforts to win.”
After graduation, Jim became a pastor. Reverend Hosutt continued, “Jim always stayed deeply involved in the communities where he served churches. His church in Cleveland, for example, had a gymnasium, and he ran large youth programs as an outreach program to the youth of the area.” Reverend Janes and his wife, Naomi, reside in Cadillac, Michigan. They have four sons and seven grandchildren.
