Linda Brands Frederick graduated in 1987, leaving behind an outstanding example of leadership, hard work, and enthusiasm for everything she touched.
During Linda’s sophomore year, she was awarded one of the two 1985 Arvid P. Zetterberg Prizes. The Zetterberg prizes are awarded to the sophomore man and woman deemed most outstanding in character and leadership during their freshman years. Linda maintained an “A” average during her freshman year. Coach Evelyn Campbell said of Linda, “She is one of the more versatile athletes we have. Her competitive nature and dedication are outstanding. She really does a wonderful job of combining athletics and academic excellence.
During her senior year, Linda took it upon herself to accept the responsibilities as “Leader” for a very young and inexperienced basketball team. She had the ability to get others to reach their full potential at all times and she accomplished this by her own outstanding example. Linda finished near the top in all statistical categories that year. She was honorable mention all-conference in her junior and senior years and a four year starter throughout her career on women’s team. Her senior year produced the most wins by any women’s basketball team up to that point. She never complained and always pushed herself to the limit.
Despite all of her athletic accomplishments, Linda also carried that same drive and will into the classroom. She finished at the top of her class, which combined with the fact she was a three sport athlete earning twelve varsity letters, four each in volleyball, basketball and track, is a feat which very few achieve. Much of the basketball team’s success following the years after Linda graduated can be attributed directly to her efforts during her final year at Knox. She not only set the tone for the success on the court but more importantly in the classroom.
In addition to her academic studies and sports involvement, Linda was also a member of Mortar Board, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and was treasurer of Alpha Phi Omega. She is presently a statistical consultant for Trilogy Consulting Corporation. Please join me by recognizing Linda Brands Frederick as an inductee into the 1994 Knox-Lombard Athletic Hall of Fame.
