Randy Oberembt graduated from Knox College in 1976 and received his masters from Western Illinois University in 1981. He was an outstanding football player at Knox, earning four letters while starting n both offence and defense.
Following his graduation, he coached Illinois high school football teams with great success for eight years. His coaching record at Tiskilwa High School was 40-18 where his team won two conference championships. His 1983 Johnsburg team as 7-2 and was ranked fifth in the Chicago Sun Times Class 3A poll.
Randy became the head football and track coach at Knox in 1985. He is the second all time winningest football coach at Knox. During his tenure, eleven of his players were selected as Division II All-Americans and his team set two NCAA records and 70 Knox records. He changed the face of football at Knox by establishing an explosive offense, fielding aggressive and tenacious teams against all opponents. His track teams were equally successful, with his 1987 team winning the conference championship.
The true significance of his contributions here, however, is the impact he had on both his players and colleagues. His reputation for sincerity, honesty, and hard work had a positive effect in nearly every individual he came into contact with a head coach. He produced highly competitive football teams at a college with a tradition and history which demanded that athletic programs adhered to high academic standards and strict admission requirements. Former Athletic Director, Harley Knosher, has described him as “always deeply concerned with well-being of every member of his teams which earned him the respect of every athlete who played for him.”
In 1996 he became Director of Athletics at Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School. His teams there have won a number of Missouri state titles, including the football state championship 1996.
Randy currently resides in Ballwin, Missouri with his wife Donna Schwall, Knox class if 1979 and their daughter, Katherine. It is my great pride that I welcome Randy Oberembt into the Knox-Lombard Athletic Hall of Fame.
