Nearly all colleges and universities have certain young men and women in mind as prototypes that they are looking for as prospective students. One type was Bob Monroe who, when he graduated from Elmwood High School, left for college with much expected of him as a scholar and as an athlete. He proceeded to meet and exceed the highest standards set for him as a college student, all-American athlete, and career businessman.
On one Saturday afternoon, he passed for 532 yards in a single game, an achievement recognized in Sports Illustrated as one of the most outstanding in college football history. He is still number 1 at Knox in numerous categories for career, season, and single game records. He finished his career with over 6,400 passing yards, 6,600 total yards, and 452 completions. He was selected as All-Conference quarterback, pre and post season All-American, team co-captain, Tom Dean Award Winner, and ended his career with 42 touchdown passes.
Bob's statistical success as a baseball player were equally impressive. He was 4 times named an All-Conference outfielder. He led the nation with a .521 batting average in 1987 and for his career he hit .438 with 79 RBIs in 75 games.
His academic accomplishments equaled or surpassed those won on the athletic fields. He graduate Phi Beta Kappa, was awarded a National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Scholarship Award and received in 1987 the Roy LeClaire Award given to the top student athlete in the Mid-West Conference. He was the recipient of the Hunter Trophy, the Hilding Prize, and was an active member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Bob earned his MBA from Indiana University and currently manages the financial analysis department at Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati.
