Russell Schwem graduated from Knox College in 1954, after earning a total of six varsity letters in both golf and swimming.
Russ lettered for Knox in golf in 1952, 1953 and 1954; in each of these three seasons, Knox won the Midwest Conference (MWC) Championship. In 1954, Russ’ senior season, he was elected co-captain, leading the Knox golf team to the conference championship by winning one of his own, as he was the Midwest Conference (MWC) men’s golf individual champion. He was a leader on and off the course and is considered by many to have been one of, if not the best, golfer to come through Knox during the 1950s.
Russ also competed in swimming at Knox College, as he lettered in 1952, 1953 and 1954. He competed in the 220 and 440 yard events while a member of the swim team. The team was undefeated in dual meets during Russ’ senior year.
He was a superb, dedicated athlete in his time here but, more important, continues to this day to uphold the highest traditions of Knox College. Bob Anderson wholeheartedly agrees by stating that Russ was “always the personification of good sportsmanship.”
