The record that Steve Laudel established in four years of varsity soccer at Knox College makes it virtually impossible to recognize anyone other than him as the most outstanding soccer player in the history of our school. But it is also true that he simultaneously established an undergraduate academic career as equally impressive.
Steve's superior caliber of play was so immediately recognized by his teammates that he was voted Most Valuable Player after his first season and every year thereafter until he graduated. He was elected captain of the team during both his junior and senior years. He accomplished something that few athletes at Knox, or at any other school for that matter, achieved when he was elected First Team All-Conference each season he played. On three different occasions he was recognized as an All-Illinois State soccer player. In 1979, at the conclusion of his college career, he was chosen as a member of the All-NCAA Mideast Soccer Team. He was also the recipient of the Dean Trevor Award.
It is important to note that all of the soccer teams Steve played on achieved great success. Indeed, all four teams won the Southern Division of the Midwest Conference before being eliminated in the Conference Championship.
Steve's interests beyond soccer included a variety of activities. He was vice-president of his fraternity, Phil Delta Theta, an active member of the Economics Club, a student observer to the Knox Board of Trustees, a member of the Knox Committee for Social Responsibility in Investment, and a member of Mortar Board.
After graduating from Knox with a major in Economics, Steve went on to receive his MBA from the University of Chicago. He is currently Vice President and Comptroller for Famous Barr. He and his wife, Cheryl, now live in St. Louis, Missouri.
