Todd Monken was one of Knox College's all-time gifted football players who was also an outstanding baseball player.  There are times in sports when players are naturally suited for a certain position ... an agile/strong-armed shortstop in baseball; a graceful, long-range jump shooter in basketball ... or what Todd Monken was when seen on a football field ... an erect quarterback in a confident/poised stance throwing a beautifully delivered spiral with pinpoint accuracy.  He truly was a picture of the perfect play caller.

In 1988 he was a virtually unstoppable passer.  He was, that season, number 1 in the nation in pass attempts, completions, and completion percentage.  He was a Pizza Hut All-American and the league's all-conference quarterback.  Todd holds 8 different Knox single-game, season and career records.  In one game, against Cornell College, he completed 41 passes.  Todd also excelled as a baseball player, lettering twice.  He was a strong hitting and excellent fielding outfielder.

Todd's arrival on the Knox campus stood against the backdrop of one of the oddest coincidences in the school's sports history.  When he transferred here, he found already enrolled Bob Monroe, the best quarterback in the Mid-West Conference.  In the Knox tradition, the coaches shortly thereafter established a "shared position" at quarterback.  Both men accepted this arrangement with dignity and mutual self-respect.

After graduating from Knox and receiving his Master's degree, Todd went on to coach under Lou Holtz as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame.  He currently serves as the offensive coordinator of the Eastern Michigan University football team.  He and his wife Terri make their home in Ypislanti, Michigan.
