Cross Country Teams Improve at Regional Meet

Rock Island, IL - Both Prairie Fire cross country teams moved up in the standings at this year’s NCAA Division III Midwest Regional meet Saturday in Rock Island, Illinois.

The Knox men’s team finished 26th out of 39 teams, an improvement of five places compared to last year’s regional finish.  It’s also the best placement for the men’s cross country program since a 25th place finish in 2002.

The women’s team placed 37th, up one spot from the 2010 regional.

Sophomore Gabe Moreno (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg ) led the men’s squad, finishing 78th in a time of 26:36.4.  He’s the first men’s runner to place in 70s in regional competition since 2000.  Senior Kevin Box (Naperville, IL, Naperville North) was next for the Prairie Fire with his 110th place finish and time of 27:13.2.

Senior Emma Swanson (West Des Moines, IA, Valley) paced the Fire women’s team with a time of 25:23.6 and 149th place finish.  First-year runner Esmeralda Alvarez (Chicago, IL, La Lumiere) followed in 27:49 and finished 216th.

Augustana College hosted the regional at Saukie Golf Course.
