GALESBURG, Illinois— The Prairie Fire Men's Soccer team played a strong and well fought tie against the St. Norbert Green Knights on senior day. They were unable to control their own destiny as far as their conference championship hopes, they place that on the shoulders of Ripon College when they play Lake Forest on Sunday.
Knox (13-3-2, 7-0-2 MWC) hit the ground running in their matchup against St. Norbert (14-3-1, 7-1-1 MWC). The first goal of the game came off the foot of
Lucas Sanchez (Sao Paulo, Brazil, Pueri Domus) in the first ten minutes of the match. Unfortunately, the Fire were unable to get any more offense together the rest of the game. Goalie
Justin Dunn (Wilmette, IL, New Trier) made seven saves including holding strong in overtime to keep the match tied.
"Well we went for it," said head coach Tyler Sheikh. "Unfortunate to concede in the second, but Derek brought his guys out swinging and the pressure was worthy of a goal. We were hard done not to find the game winner as we tossed some formations at Norbert, but in the end a fair result. Now after going undefeated in regular season conference play, we'll look to compete like heck for a tournament title."
If Ripon ties or defeats Lake Forest tomorrow, the Prairie Fire will be conference champions for the second time in three years. They have already clinched a spot in the tournament, but they are hoping to host it. With location to be determined, Knox's next matchup will come in the Midwest Conference tournament on November 4.
