GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire men's soccer team defeated Illinois College 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
Knox (10-3, 4-0 MWC) scored first on a penalty kick goal by
Jake Ly (Vandalia, OH, Beavercreek) at the 29:00 mark, but Monmouth tied the score 1-1 heading into halftime. The Prairie Fire answered with a goal from
Erick Karkut (Mount Prospect, IL, Prospect) early in the second half and Ly and Karkut each added another goal to put the Blueboys away.
"Kurt had his guys set up to defend really well. It certainly worked well for them last season when we played and today the game wasn't where we wanted it to be at the half. The fellas responded to our team talk which was about increasing our tempo. They knew the destiny of the game was in their hands, said head coach Tyler Sheikh. "Credit to senior captain Jacob Ly to bag his brace. Just another one of many scorers we have. I'm pleased for the team that they exacted some revenge on our two conference losses from last season, but the guys know there's plenty more to do."
