GALESBURG, IL- The Prairie Fire men's soccer team's fantastic season came to an abrupt ending in the first round of the Midwest Conference Tournament on Friday. Knox finished the season with a final record of 13-3-4 after a 3-2 overtime loss to Grinnell.
Â
Knox looked like it would be safe early in the game when Erick Karkut put a penalty kick in the back of the net in the third minute. Grinnell would counter with a goal of their own, but Lucas Sanchez gave Fire the lead again in the the 64th minute. Grinnell evened up the match shortly after and put away the game sealing goal in the overtime period.
Â
Knox out shot the Pioneers 22-6, but a bizarre turn of events in overtime led to the end of the season for the Fire.
Knox will graduate eight seniors who have all made the Midwest Conference Tournament all four years on the team. The men posted a modern Midwest Conference record (since the conference went to at least a 9-game schedule) by only conceding one goal in regular season MWC play on their way to their second regular season championship in the last four seasons. Their defense also set a MWC record for shutouts in a season by blanking 12 total opponents.Â
