Men's Soccer Picks Up First Victory of the Season

GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire men's soccer team defeated Westminster 2-0 on Friday night to earn their first victory of the season.

For Knox (1-2-1), it was a game full of firsts as the win was head coach Brian O'Connor's first victory as a head coach. It was also the first game played on the newly renovated Jorge Prats Field. The Prairie Fire scored their first goal of the year when Jun Min found the back of the net at the 18:31 mark in the first half. First-year Martin Garcia earned the first assist of the year on the goal, Alessandro Benelli also assisted on the play. Garcia's corner kick was headed by Benelli before Min headed it back the other way and into the goal. Knox took a 1-0 lead into halftime, despite dominating possession through most of the first period.  First-year Jake Totty gave the Prairie Fire some insurance when he scored the first goal of his career with about 15 minutes left in the game. Fellow first-year Milan Van Roessel picked up the first assist of his career on the play.

Knox outshot the Blue Jays 23-6 on the day, including a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal. Justin Dunn made three nice saves in the second half, the first on a penalty kick.

"Today was a quality win against a quality opponent," said O'Connor. "It was a great way to christen the new field. We looked really good in attack and our movement was a big improvement from the previous games. We still have some things to work on and are looking forward to getting back at it on Sunday."

The Prairie Fire host Augustana on September 9 to continue their non-conference schedule.
