GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire men's soccer team were defeated by the St. Norbert College Green Knights Saturday, falling 2-1 in overtime. With the defeat, Knox's efforts for a repeat appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament were dashed.
In the first half, Knox weathered several offensive attacks by the Green Knights. Joao Freire made reliable stops in goal, giving the Prairie Fire defense some breathing room and protection. On the offensive side, Knox struggled to get many shots on target, usually seeing their attacks cleared by St. Norbert right before they could come to fruition. The Green Knights led 6-4 in shots for the half, and it closed with each time not able to convert on the few opportunities they had.
The second half saw the Prairie Fire defense really begin to be tested by St. Norbert. After conceding a corner kick in the 53rd minute, Knox fell behind 1-0 after Drake Vandermouse headed home a goal for the Green Knights. After trading yellow cards, Knox dug its heels in and used nice passing from Nick Janulis and Martin Garica to set up Joey Dorgan for the equalizing goal in the 54th minute. Both teams kicked their offensive attacks up a gear after this, with Freire forced to make several saves in order to keep Knox from trailing again. After one last ditch effort from the Prairie Fire, the second half ended with the score tied 1-1.
With the beginning of the first period of extra time, the action ground to a standstill as neither side wanted to risk letting up a potential chance by playing too aggressively. A shot from Adetayo Adefioye was narrowly saved by St. Norbert, and the first overtime period ended without a score. Not 30 seconds into the second overtime period, however, the Green Knights broke through the Prairie Fire defense, looped a cross into the box, and headed home the winning goal.
