GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire men's tennis team dropped a close match to Loras 4-5 on Sunday afternoon in their season opener.
Ajay Gustafson won his debut match at #1 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over his Duhawk counterpart. He teamed up with Jared Schwarz to win 8-4 at #1 doubles. "Ajay displayed an on court presence that is admirable," said head coach Meredith Witherell. "He has tenacity and confidence and will provide a challenge for future opponents."
Brad Newland picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at #2 singles and teamed up with Dobbin Pine to defeat Loras 8-5 at #2 doubles. "Brad's wins at #2 singles and #2 doubles are proof of his hard work on and off the court," added Witherell. "This young man is an example of what dedication and determination can do."
"This was a great season opener and helped us determine those areas on which we need to focus and refine during practice," said Witherell. "I am optimistic this group of young men will see multiple wins this season. Hard work, diligence, and confidence will be our foundation."
Knox travels to Lakeland University in Wisconsin on February 16.
