GALESBURG, Illinois – The Knox College Prairie Fire baseball team were defeated in both games of their doubleheader against the Millikin Big Blue on Sunday.
The first game was tight early on, but got away from Knox relatively quickly. Despite letting up a run early in the first inning, Knox responded on a Kobe Shutter single in the bottom half of the inning. Unfortunately, a combination of fielding miscues and walks led to a flurry of runs in the second and third inning. After a double steal and an error allowed two more runs to score, a Jake Stanton home run provided the final nail in the coffin of the Prairie Fire, who were unable to score after the first inning. As a result, the Prairie Fire fell to Millikin 13-1.
The second game provided a closer score, but another unfortunate result for Knox. A fielder's choice drove in a run for the Big Blue in the top of the first. Another fielder's choice created another run for Millikin in the third. Knox was able to respond in the bottom of the fourth, when Ben Bucher drove in Shutter with an RBI single to draw the Prairie Fire to within one. Unfortunately, this would be the only run Knox would score this game. Despite excellent pitching in relief by Matt Shover, the Big Blue would drive in another run in the top of the ninth, and the Prairie Fire were unable to finish with a victory.
Knox looks to find more wins in their next doubleheader against the University of Dubuque on Tuesday at 1:00 pm.
