ROCK ISLAND, Illinois—The Prairie Fire baseball team traveled to Augustana on Thursday night.
Knox started off on a good note when Juston Woodard led off the game with a single up the middle. He was erased on a fielder's choice by Andrew Recker, but Recker stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Recker was left stranded on third to end the inning.
Trevan Lowtharp set the Vikings down in order in the bottom half and the Prairie Fire bats came alive again in the second inning when Ben Bucher singled. He was picked off before a Joey Salazar walk and Salazar was stranded on second base to end the inning.
Zach Nitzel worked around an error in the bottom of the second and Knox threatened again in the top of the third when Woodard singled with one out. Woodard got a great jump on a ball in the dirt and tried to advance to second. He seemed to get in before the tag, but was called out.
Augustana got the scoring started in the bottom of the third when they plated seven runs on a series of walks, hits, and errors by the Prairie Fire. The Vikings added four runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to earn the 12-0 victory in seven innings.
Woodard finished the day 2-for-3 and Connor Gwaltney picked up two hits in two trips to the plate.
Knox will host Grinnell on April 6 and then travel to Grinnell on April 7.
