GALESBURG, Illinois -Â The Prairie Fire softball team fell to Cornell College 10-2 in the first game, but came back strong to win the second game 3-2.Â
The Cornell Rams came ready to play in the first game, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Fire were able to hold their own and found a way to tie up the game in the top of the third inning. The Rams dominated in the 5th inning, scoring 9 runs to win the game 10-2.Â
The first game loss ignited the Prairie Fire team heading into game 2. Knox started strong in the first inning scoring two runs. Similar to the first game, the lead was only held for 2 innings until the Rams were able to tie it up. The Prairie Fire found their winning run in the 5th inning. The Knox defense were able to hold the Rams to 2 runs the entire game and had no errors.Â
Mimi Schweitzer had a fantastic second game on the mound. Schweitzer earned her second pitching win this season after only allowing 2 runs the whole game.Â
Big hitters for the Fire included Lacey Miller, Haylee Carpenter, Maya McEwen. Miller went 3 for 5 at the plate, earned one run, and had one RBI for the day. Carpenter showed up for the Fire big in the second game. Carpenter went 2 for 3 and earned 2 RBIs. McEwen wrapping up the hitting going 2 for 5 and earning one run.
"I am so proud of how hard we came back after the game one loss," said head coach Erin Rutledge. "Mimi did a great job controlling their hitters and the defense behind her was tough. Haylee's 2-run double in the first really got the team fired up to hold out for the win."
The Prairie Fire are back in action against Grinnell College at home on Tuesday, April 20th.Â
