Baseball Earns Split with Cornell

GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire baseball team split a doubleheader with Cornell on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams struck first in game one when they plated a run in the top of the fourth. Cornell added a run in the seventh inning and another in the eighth to take a 3-0 lead into the ninth inning. Knox put runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but a double play left a man on third with two outs. The next batter Charlie Gibbons hit a two-run home-run, but the Rams got the final out to win game one 3-2.

Matt Shover was the tough luck loser in game one, giving up no earned runs on three hits. He struck out nine in seven innings.

Cornell scored first in game two when they plated a run in the second inning. The Rams added to their lead with two runs in the seventh, but the Prairie Fire responded with a run of their own in the bottom half. Knox tied the game in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Cornell scored a run in the top of the tenth, but Adam Brown drew a bases loaded walk to even the score and Evan Laws hit a sacrifice fly to earn the walk-off 5-4 victory for the Prairie Fire.

Tyler Bialek gave up two earned runs in six plus innings in game two and Matthew Michalowski earned the win in relief by giving up one run on three hits in four innings.

Gibbons and Shover led Knox with three hits on the day. Laws and Chris McTeague each added two hits.

"We played two very good games today," said associate head coach James Clark. "Matt threw a great game in game one and deserved the win. Tyler also threw very well and Matthew came up big in relief. We had some clutch hitting and played some of our best baseball of the year. We will look to build on this for the rest of the season."

The Prairie Fire travel to Cornell on May 9 for another conference doubleheader.
