Softball Drops First Game in Spring Break Trip

CLERMONT, Florida – The Knox Prairie Fire softball team dropped a back-and-forth game against St. Scholastica Tuesday afternoon 5-3. The second game planned for Tuesday against Washington College (MD.) was postponed to later this week (TBD).

The Saints of St. Scholastica started their lead early in the first inning with 2 runs and another in the second inning. In the bottom of the second inning, the Prairie Fire started to read the Saint's pitcher and infield and recorded their first run of the game. First-year, Leila Rouhani, singled to put their first run on base. Senior, Brittany Salinas, singled to bring Rouhani in.

Down by two going into the bottom of the third-inning, Knox took advantage of the shaky Saints to tie the game. In the bottom of the third inning, first-year, Maddie Poetzinger started the hits for the inning with a single. Maya McEwen singled and Poetzinger took advantage of the Saints throwing error to advance to third. Senior, Lacey Miller, was ready to go with the tying run on base. Miller singled to bring in one run. The Saints were kept on their toes, while the Prairie Fire excelled at benefiting from the Saint's mistakes. With a wild pitch, McEwen took the chance and scored the tying run.

With 4 innings left to play, the Saints and the Prairie Fire were at a standstill. Neither team were able to get a hit from inning 4 to 87. Forced into extra innings, the Saints prospered in the top of the eighth scoring two runs. The Prairie Fire were unable to connect in the bottom of the eighth and dropped a close game 5-3 to start their Florida trip.

While the game was defensively focused, Poetzinger led the Prairie Fire with 2 hits while Salinas and Rouhani each recorded an RBI.

"This was a great way to start our spring break trip. St. Scholastica is a very strong team and today we kept them on alert" said head coach, Erin Rutledge. "Today was the best we played this season, and I am extremely proud of this team."

Knox returns to action tomorrow, March 16th, if whether permits to play Hamline University at 8 AM CST/9 AM EST and Babson College at 12:30 PM CST/1:30 PM EST.
