Softball Drops a Pair in Florida

The Knox Prairie Fire softball team fell by a final score of 10-2 against the Weselyan Cardinals in the first game of their Friday doubleheader. After the loss, Knox's record on the season sits at 1-7.

The Prairie Fire fell into a hole early, as a 2-run home run by the Cardinals in the bottom of the first inning opened the scoring on the day. Knox used some smart base running and questionable Wesleyan fielding to score a run of their own in the top of the second, but a 4 run spot the next half inning for the Cardinals gave the Prairie Fire an even larger challenge. Knox's offense had some bright spots in a mostly dreary game, however, with Taylynn Kizer going 2-2 out of the designated hitter role. Indeed, in the top of the fifth inning, Britney Salinas powered a double in the gap to score Mimi Schweitzer from second base, giving the Prairie Fire their only other run of the game. Despite this, the Cardinals continued to pour on runs, and Knox was unable to muster much of a comeback.

The Knox Prairie Fire softball team dropped their second game in Friday's doubleheader, losing 12-6 against the Macalester College Scots. The loss puts their record on the season at 1-8.

The first two innings were quiet for both teams, with Mimi Schweitzer putting on an effective pitching performance for the Prairie Fire. The Scots drove across a run in the top of the third inning, but Knox scored two more of their own in the bottom half, using clutch hitting from Taylynn Kizer and Morgan Bean to push the score to 2-1. It was a bit of a battle after this for both teams, as they traded the lead back and forth by stringing together hit after hit. After the Scots again took the lead in the top of the fourth, Leila Rouhani rocketed a ball into the gap to score Casey Hipp, and the Prairie Fire stormed back in the next inning to grab a 6-5 lead. Unfortunately, Macalester's offense took over completely, scoring 6 runs in the sixth inning and 3 in the seventh to bury Knox in what was up to that point an intense game.

Knox looks to get some momentum this Saturday when they play their final doubleheader in The Spring Games.

"Really hard fought back and forth games against a good hitting teams," said head coach Erin Rutledge. "It was nice to see our bats coming alive this morning. It'll get us prepared for tomorrows matchups."
