GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire baseball team split a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Beloit on Sunday. Knox won game one 5-4, before falling 14-4 in game two.
The Buccaneers scored a run in the top of the first inning in game one, but the Prairie Fire responded with 3 runs in the first two innings to take a 3-1 lead. Beloit tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning and then took a 4-3 lead with a run in the seventh. Troy Brandt hit a home-run to tie the game in the bottom half of the seventh and Knox walked it off with a single by EJ Roncone to score pinch runner Cole Shepherd in the ninth.
Tucker Sams started the game on the mound for the Prairie Fire, giving up three runs in six innings. Roncone pitched the last 2.1 innings to earn the win.
The Buccaneers scored four runs in the first two innings of game two, but Knox scratched back with a run in the second and another in the fourth. Beloit held a 5-3 lead heading into the sixth, but they erupted for nine runs in the sixth and seventh to earn the victory.
Cole Tanner led the Prairie Fire with four hits. Brandt finished with three hits on the day. Roncone, Chris McTeague, Kendall Ballman, and Braden Ogden each added two hits apiece.
"We played very well for 14 innings today," said associate head coach James Clark. "Unfortunately two innings in the second game ruined what might have been a chance at a doubleheader sweep. We showed what we are capable of today and now we need to believe we can play like that any time we hit the field."
Knox returns to action when they host Monmouth on April 5.
