GALESBURG, Illinois - The Knox softball team earned a split with Mount Mary University on a cold Saturday afternoon.
Game one began with an early one run lead from Mount Mary in the top of the second inning. The Prairie Fire held Mount Mary to their one run and scored one of their own in the bottom of the fourth. The game remained tied 1-1 for the remainder of the seven innings, pushing the two teams into extra innings. Mount Mary plated four more runs in the top of the eighth. Knox was unable to rally and ultimately lost 5-1.
Game two began with a scoreless first inning. Mount Mary began inning two with one run, but soon lost the lead as the Prairie Fire also scored a run in the second with a big double and RBI from junior, Maya McEwen. Knox was able to hold Mount Mary in inning three, and scored another run giving the Fire the lead. The Prairie Fire defense played hard and kept Mount Mary from scoring any more runs for the rest of the game. Game two ended with a 2-1 Prairie Fire win.
McEwen led the Fire in the batters box today with three hits, two of those three being doubles. Liv Dunn, Lacey Miller, Haylee Carpenter and Mimi Schweitzer all added two hits for the day. Schweitzer earned her first complete win this season with six strikeouts and only one walk.
"I am proud of how we played today" stated head coach Erin Clark. "The cold weather isn't always easy to play in, but I am happy with the focus and determination that the team presented today. I hope that we can carry the momentum from this win as we move into conference play."
The Prairie Fire will begin conference play tomorrow, April 2, as they host Grinnell with game one beginning at 2:00 p.m.
