GALESBURG, Illinois - The Knox College softball team dropped a pair today against Illinois College.
Illinois College began game one with a few runners on base in the top of the first. However, the Knox defense worked hard to leave the runners stranded with no scored runs. The first inning ended with no runs from either team. The Lady Blues scored two runs in both the second and third inning. Illinois College was leading 4-0 going into the fourth. After a few more scoreless innings, Illinois College scored one more in the top of the seventh. Prairie Fire softball attempted to put some runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh, but ultimately left one runner on and lost game one 5-0.
The Lady Blues carried their momentum from game one into game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. The rest of game two continued to be a constant back and forth battle with both teams looking to score. Both teams continuously displayed stellar defense making it difficult for any runs to cross the plate. The rest of the game remained scoreless and with that Knox dropped game two 3-0.
Eileen Sheetz and Maya McEwen led the Fire today with two hits apiece.
Head coach Erin Clark led the team through a tough two games. After game two she stated, "I am very proud of how the team played today. Illinois College is a good team and Prairie Fire softball was represented well with the perseverance the girls displayed in both games today. If we continue to build off of our game-play from today, I have no doubt that we will pick up a few more wins before the end of our season".
Prairie Fire softball will continue play with two make-up conference games against Lawrence on Sunday, April 23 at 1:00 and 3:00 P.M.
