Softball Sweeps Harris-Stowe

ST. LOUIS, Missouri - Prairie Fire softball picked up a couple of non-conference wins against Harris-Stowe State University on Tuesday.

Knox had a bit of a slow start in game one. Harris-Stowe scored first with one run in the bottom of the first. The Hornets maintained their lead and the score remained 1-0 going into the third. The prairie fire began inning three with a few baserunners right out the gate. A big two RBI double from Maddie Poetzinger put the Fire ahead. Knox tallied three runs in the third, putting the Fire ahead 3-1. Harris-Stowe scored one additional run in the bottom of the third, that one being the last the Hornets scored in game one. Knox continued to score at least two runs per inning for the rest of the game. The Fire ended the game in six innings with a 10-2 win.

Game two began with a scoreless first inning, but Knox quickly changed the momentum of the game in inning two. A lead off single from Maddie Hicks was just the start of a big string of hits from the Fire. Knox was able to score six runs, and the score remained 6-0 until the fourth inning. The Prairie Fire extended their lead with an additional run in the top of the fourth. The Hornets were able to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Knox led 7-2 going into the last two innings. In the top of the seventh, Knox scored three more runs. The Hornets attempted to use their last at bat to score some runs. A lead-off double from the Hornets put them in a prime position to score, but the Prairie Fire defense allowed no runs across the plate. Knox wins again with a score of 10-2.

Poetzinger led the team with four hits on the day. Ally Hyde racked up nine strikeouts in game one.

"We adjusted well as a team today, and with that we were able to produce some big hits," said head coach Erin Clark. "After today we are looking at a four game win streak which is huge going into our last few conference doubleheaders of the season. I'm excited to carry our momentum into this weekend with some big games against our close rival, Monmouth."

Knox softball will travel to Monmouth on April 29th for a rival conference match-up.
