Softball Splits with Cornell to End Historic Season

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Knox College softball team concluded their season today with a split against Cornell.

Game one began with no runs across the plate for the first two innings. The bottom of the third inning put Cornell in the lead with one run. The Rams were able to extend their lead with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Prairie Fire pushed one across in the top of the fifth. Cornell led 5-1 going into the sixth inning. The Rams scored one more in the sixth. The Prairie Fire found themselves unable to produce any more runs and ultimately lost game one 6-1.

The Fire gained an early lead in game two with four runs in the first inning and another three in the second. Cornell found some gaps and were able to put two of their own on the board in the bottom of the second. Knox added one additional run in the third. The Fire led 8-2 until the sixth inning, when the Rams pushed one more across the plate. The Rams were unable to catch up from the damage done in innings one and two. The Prairie Fire won game two 8-3.

Senior, Lacey Miller, led the team with three hits on the day in her final games. Maya McEwen, Taylynn Kizer, and Maddie Hicks trailed closely behind with two hits a piece.

"I am really proud of this team's willingness to push for each other,`" said head coach Erin Clark. "Even though game one was tough and we were out of the tournament, we pushed to conclude our season with a win. Our three graduating seniors will be greatly missed as they contributed a large part to the path that has led to our historic season. Although the season is over, I'm really proud of what we accomplished as a team this year."

Prairie Fire softball have finished their season in fifth place for the conference, just one spot and one game shy of tournament play. The MWC preseason coaches poll put Knox softball in last place, and this historic season is just the beginning of a team that will continue to prove people wrong. Knox had their best season in over 20 years with 13 wins, including a 7-9 record in conference.
