GALESBURG, Ill. ยญโ The Knox College athletics department announced its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for events that took place over the previous two weeks, between Dec. 2-15, with the honors going to Sarina Dacio of women's basketball and Russell Wright of men's basketball.
Dacio, a fifth-year guard from San Diego, California, averaged 10.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals in four Prairie Fire games over the past two weeks. But most significantly, she became only the fourth woman to score 1,000 points at Knox College, surpassing the milestone in the 74-58 victory against Lawrence at home on Dec. 11. She is also on the verge of setting the program record for 3-pointers in a career, needing just five more to break the mark of 179 held by Karlie Thorn '19. In the most recent game, Dacio knocked down a trio of triples and led the Prairie Fire with 15 points at Ripon College.
A junior from Savannah, Georgia, Wright has been a consistent performer for Knox this season at both ends of the court. In the four games during the last two weeks, the 6-6 forward has averaged 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds, hitting more than half of his field goals (17-of-33) in the process. He posted a season-high 16 points in the conference opener at Grinnell, then added his second career double-double at home versus Lawrence with 11 points and 10 rebounds. His 10 blocked shots and nine steals lead the team this year, and his 23 assists are just one shy of the team lead.
The Knox Athletes of the Week will be announced every Tuesday afternoon throughout the athletic calendar.
