Softball Falls Short Against Lawrence

GALESBURG, Illinois -  The Knox Softball team dropped two games this afternoon at Lawrence University with a scoreline of 6-9 in the first game, and 3-5 in the second game.

Game one started with the Vikings scoring two runs to open up the score in the first inning. The Prairie Fire got a runner on base in the second inning off a triple from Maddie Poetzinger. Knox, unfortunately, could not capitalize and left a runner on base. The 2-0 scoreline stayed the same for most of the game until the Vikings added five runs in the fifth inning, taking a 7-0 lead into the sixth inning. The Prairie Fire came out at the top of the sixth strong with a string of hits initiated by a double from Maya McEwen. Liv Dunn, Maddie Hicks, and Janet Letini all followed with singles of their own adding four runs for the Prairie Fire. The bottom of the sixth saw Lawrence add two runs to their tally. Hopeful for a comeback, Knox continued to fight in the seventh inning bringing in two more runs with a double from Dunn, and a single from Hicks. Ultimately though, the Prairie Fire came up short in the end.

In game two, the Vikings got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the second and third innings, both teams showed great defense with neither team getting on the board in both innings. Lawrence batted in another run in the fourth, and two runs in the fifth inning. Down 5-0 heading into the sixth inning, Knox tried to kick start a comeback bringing in a run off of a wonderful double from Poetzinger. The Prairie Fire took this momentum into the seventh inning with a quick single from Nelson. With hits from Dunn and Hicks and a string of errors from the Vikings, Knox brought in two more runs. With a comeback quickly brewing, the Prairie Fire unfortunately ran out of time with a 3-5 defeat.

The Prairie Fire were led today by a phenomenal performance from Hicks with two hits and two RBIs through both games.

"We were right with Lawrence all day, but unfortunately we just waited too long in both games to get our bats going," said coach Casey Hipp.
Overall happy with our performance today, and we are making big steps in the right direction. I can't wait to see where it takes us," added Hipp.

The Prairie Fire will be back on the road this Tuesday as they head to Jacksonville, IL for a doubleheader against Illinois College. Games are scheduled for 3 pm and 5 pm start times.
