Newman’s 68 Carries Knox Men to Victory

Junior Gabriel Newman placed third at even par at the Fighting Scot Invitational

MONMOUTH, Ill. — With six birdies in the second and final round of the Fighting Scot Invitational, Knox junior Gabriel Newman carded a 3-under 68 to climb four spots into third place at even par and lead the Prairie Fire to an 18-stroke victory (292-291—583, +15) on Sunday. Knox has won this event each of the past five years.

Newman was one of three Knox players to place in the top five of the 60-player field with junior Pranav Nandakumar in fourth (73-71—144, +2) and first-year Thomas Lyaudet in fifth (72-73—145, +3) at Gibson Woods Golf Course. Nandakumar produced three birdies during his round while Lyaudet, who entered the day tied for the lead, sank two in his last four holes of the round.

  • Waldorf College had the best round today with a 6-over 290, one stroke ahead of the Prairie Fire, finishing second in the team standings (311-290—601, +33).
  • The two other Knox golfers, sophomore Nathaniel Zug and first-year Diego Carrillo, both finished in the top 20 with a 12-over 154 (tied for 12th) and 14-over 156 (tied for 18th).
  • Thomas Houdayer of Waldorf won medalist honors thanks to his 5-under 66 — the low round of the tournament — to edge Monmouth's Briggs Bossert by a stroke with a 140 (-2).

The Prairie Fire will be back in action on Friday for the first round of the Midwest Region Fall Classic hosted by Benedictine University at the Brighton Dale Golf Course in Kansasville, Wisconsin.
