LAKE GENEVA, Wis. — First-year Diego Carrillo rode six birdies and 10 pars to a 4-under 67 in the second and final round of the UW-Stout Invite on Monday, helping the Knox College men's golf team shave 17 strokes off its first-round total and climb a couple spots on the leaderboard into 12th in the 22-team field with a 29-over 597 (307-290). Aurora College edged out UW-Eau Claire for the team title by a stroke with a 575 (+7).
Coming off a 7-over 78Â in the first round on Sunday, Carrillo teed off on the 11th hole of the Highlands Course at Grand Geneva Resort. Fifteen holes later, the rookie had six birdies and nine pars, and although he finished up by bogeying two of his last three holes, he still produced the second-best round of the tournament, one stroke off the medalist, Carter Ruegsegger of the University of Dubuque, who carded a 5-under 66 today. With a 3-over 145, Carrillo wrapped up the two rounds in a tie for 14th.
For the second straight day, junior Pranav Nandakumar made par on 15 of the 18 holes, but he added a birdie to his ledger today to finish the two rounds at 76-72—148 (+6), tying for 31st with first-year teammate Thomas Lyaudet, who led the Prairie Fire yesterday with a 1-over 72.
- Carrillo's 4-under 67 is the lowest known score since Ryan Meier '07 carded a 5-under 67 in April of 2005 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational.
- Junior Gabriel Newman shaved nine strokes off his first-round score with a 4-over 75 today and tied for 87th in the 124-player field.
The Prairie Fire will be back in action at the Central Fall Classic at the Finkbine Golf Course in Pella, Iowa, on Oct. 7-8.
