RIPON, Wis. — Though the Knox College men's soccer team fell behind 2-0 in the first half at Ripon on Saturday afternoon, the Prairie fire scored the next three goals before the intermission, only to have the host Red Hawks rally to tie the game in the second half for a 3-3 draw. Knox is now 6-3-4 on the season and 2-2-1 in the Midwest Conference, and Ripon moves to 7-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the league.
Seth Schroeder gave the Red Hawks that 2-0 lead, scoring in the 19th and 23rd minutes. But the Prairie Fire did not simply hang their heads; they got to work.
Little more than four minutes after the second Schroeder goal, sophomore Thomas Sánchez Madden got Knox on the board with a little help from junior Kestervens Dera. Then in the 37th minute, the two traded roles with Dera putting the ball in the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the year and Sánchez Madden providing the assist, knotting the game at two apiece.
Sánchez Madden struck again with about a minute left in the half in unassisted fashion, allowing the Prairie Fire to take a 3-2 lead into halftime. But Knox would not get another shot on goal for the remainder of the match.
Schroeder could not be contained on this day, however, as he recorded a hat trick with his third goal of the day in the 64th minute. The remained of the match featured just two shots by each team, and the only one on goal was denied by Knox sophomore keeper Diogo Pereira.
- The Prairie Fire had three shots on goal in the game, and every one of them turned into a goal.
- Since winning eight straight meetings with Ripon between 2013-21, Knox is 0-1-3 with the last three contests ending in ties of increasing tallies — 1-1, 2-2 and now 3-3.
- This matches the highest-scoring tie game for Knox over at least the last 48 years, with the only one matching it being the 2024 Midwest Conference Tournament semifinal against Illinois College that ended in a 3-3 tie, though the Blueboys won a shootout to advance to the finals and knock out the Prairie Fire.
Knox plays again on Wednesday, Oct. 15 when the team travels to Cornell College (4-7-1, 2-1-1 MWC) for a key showdown at 4 p.m. The contest can be watched live through the Knox portal on Hudl — watchmidwestsports.com/knox — with live stats also available on the official website of Knox College Athletics, PrairieFire.Knox.edu, courtesy of Cornell College.
