DAVENPORT, Fla. — Coming off a 12-4 victory over Salem State yesterday to start its spring break trip in Florida, the Knox College baseball team suffered a 15-1 defeat at the hands of Plattsburgh State on Wednesday afternoon at Northeast Regional Park. The Cardinals (5-5) banged out 14 hits while holding the Prairie Fire (5-3) to just four in the game shortened to seven innings due to the run rule.
Plattsburgh built up a 6-0 lead through three innings with four of those runs being unearned and another scoring on a wild pitch.
Knox put its lone tally on the board in the fifth. Senior Tre Chatman III was plunked to start the stanza, sophomore Tyler Thiem sacrificed him to second and sophomore Tyler Kemp poked a ball through the right side for an RBI single.
But the Cardinals answered back by collecting seven hits in the bottom half, scoring seven runs to put the game out of reach. They tacked on two more in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Left-hander Kaelen Clarkson (2-1) picked up the win with a scheduled short start of one inning, facing the minimum in the first. Sophomore righty Leo Dircks (1-1) took the loss for surrendering five runs, only two earned, in two innings of work.
Knox returns to action tomorrow at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida, when the Fire take on Framingham State (1-7) at 3:30 p.m. (EDT).
