MUNDELEIN, Ill. — One day after the Knox College men's golf team turned in its best round of golf in at least a decade, first-year Diego Carrillo led the team to a nearly identical score with his 3-under 69 in the second and final round of the Forester Spring Invite at the 6,757-yard, par-72 Prairie Course of the Countryside Golf Club on Saturday. The Prairie Fire finished the day at 4-over par to conclude the tournament at 7-over (583).
Carrillo got off to a fast start by sinking a birdie on his first hole of the day, the 546-yard, par-5 seventh with the shotgun start. He added four more birdies to his round and only two bogeys to be one of just six golfers in the 107-player field to break 70 on this day and lift him 35 places in the standings into a tie for 19th.
Another first-year, Thomas Lyaudet, also tied for 19th, following up his first round 71 (-1) with a 2-over 74 today featuring 14 pars and one birdie. Junior Pranav Nandakumar carded a 1-over 73 today with four birdies to his credit.
The other Knox golfer contributing to the team score today was sophomore Nathaniel Zug with a 4-over 76, ending his round with his lone birdie. Junior Gabriel Newman was even par through nine holes today and 1-under for the tournament at that point, but he struggled over the final nine to end the tournament tied for 42nd at 5-over (149).
- Aurora University edge past host Lake Forest with a tournament-low 279 (-9) today to finish at 15-under over the two rounds, three strokes ahead of the Foresters.
- But it was Lake Forest's Tyler Wengronowitz who took home medalist honors thanks to his 6-under 66 today to end the two rounds at 10-under, two strokes ahead of Wheaton College's Jonah Swartz.
- Carrillo's 3-under was one stroke shy of his best score this year; he carded a 4-under 67 in the final round of the UW-Stout Invitational on Sept. 30 last fall.
Knox will play one more tournament — the Viking Invitational hosted by Augustana College — on April 26-27 prior to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held May 4-6 at Timbergate Golf Course in Edinburgh, Indiana.
