Back-to-Back Wins on Back-to-Back Days

Thomas Sánchez Madden and Kestervens Dera provided the goals in the road win

MILWAUKEE, Wis. —  About 24 hours after earning a 1-0 home victory on Saturday afternoon, the Knox College men's soccer team picked up another win by besting Wisconsin Lutheran College on the road. The Prairie Fire improved to 2-1-2 on the season with the victory, while the Warriors fell to 1-5-1.

Sophomore Thomas Sánchez Madden ended a scoreless deadlock in the second half. A high kick from near the sideline landed in the box and ended up at his feet after glancing off the head of a defender and bouncing once. Sánchez Madden quickly fired off a shot that the WLC keeper could not react fast enough before it was past him for a 1-0 Knox lead in the 56th minute.

With barely seven minutes remaining, the Prairie Fire got a little insurance that ended up paying off. Knox pushed the ball quickly up the field and senior Sasha Esper hit a teammate in stride, who beat the goalkeeper, only to have his trickling shot denied by a Warrior defender. That play only delayed the inevitable with junior Kestervens Dera there to clean up and score his third goal in as many games.

Dera's goal ended up being the game winner because less than a minute later, Wisconsin Lutheran answered with a 20-yard boot by Caleb Dukic that glanced off the left goal post and caromed into the net, ending the shutout bid and closing the gap to one again.

The Prairie Fire defense tightened up from there, denying even a shot to be fired anywhere near their goal until the final horn sounded.

Following the match, Knox Head Coach Tyler Sheikh said, "The road game on the backend of this very hot doubleheader weekend was a real test for us. I am proud we stayed together to finish off two deserving wins. It wasn't always pretty, just wins. But it backs up some of the work we've been putting in and will continue to do."

  • Dera also scored the game-winner in the 1-0 win over Dominican University yesterday.
  • Both teams had just three shots on goal the entire match with sophomore goalkeeper Diogo Pereira saving two.
  • This was just the second-ever meeting on the pitch between the two schools with Knox winning the previous encounter in Milwaukee back in 2017 by a 1-0 final.

The Prairie Fire will continue a three-game road trip on Wednesday evening when they play at Coe College (2-1-3) at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live with live stats available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College Athletics.
