Knox College enhances opportunities for Prairie Fire Athletics and campus community with lights installation at Prats Field

GALESBURG, Ill. — Knox College announced today an important enhancement to the Prairie Fire Athletics facilities: the installation of lights at Prats Field, the college's soccer pitch. This first-of-its-kind project for both the college and the athletics department reflects Knox's continued commitment to enhancing opportunities for its students.

The addition of lights directly addresses a long-standing need for the college's men's and women's soccer programs, which share the field for training and is made possible through funds generated from a bond issuance solidified last May, a portion of which is dedicated to capital improvements.

"While the new lighting will make occasional evening games possible, the project's primary purpose is to support student-athlete development and ensure practices can occur without impacting class time or overlapping with each other," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Justin Newell.

Construction on the project is currently underway. During the week of Sept. 8–12, crews pulled the conduit necessary for the lighting system, and the light poles arrived on Sept. 15. In designing the system, Knox prioritized responsible stewardship of the surrounding environment. The field lights will be carefully shielded to minimize glare and prevent light spill beyond the field's property, helping protect neighbors and preserving the clarity of the night sky for the college observatory.

This initiative also opens the door for expanded opportunities beyond varsity athletics. Knox is working toward community agreements that will allow use by campus club sports and other student organizations, with an understanding of the impact on neighbors and campus facilities.

"The Prats Field lighting project embodies the college's belief that progress happens when we come together across programs and perspectives," added Newell. "It represents not only a win for the athletics department but also a demonstration of Knox's broader mission to serve our students and community in ways that are innovative, collaborative and considerate of the environment."

The light installation at Prats Field is expected to be complete in mid-October.
