There was plenty of offense to go around on Saturday for the Knox baseball team, but unfortunately for the Prairie Fire, Grinnell was able to score more.
Knox dropped a doubleheader on Saturday, falling in the home and conference openers to the Pioneers, 20-13, 15-8.Â
Despite racking up 21 runs on 29 hits, Knox could not keep Grinnell's offense in check.
In the opener, the teams were tied 5-5 after four innings. The turning point came in the fifth when Grinnell erupted for nine runs to seize control. Although Knox responded with two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth, the gap proved too wide to close.
Thomas Wilmot and Owen Shannon each had three RBI, while Andrew Garrett, Jacob Halseth, Tyler Kemp, and Shannon all had three hits. As a team, seven Knox players scored at least one run, eight had at least a hit, and eight drove home at least one run.
In the second game, it was much the same: Grinnell took a big lead, Knox rallied, then the Pioneers responded.Â
Grinnell led 8-1 through five-and-a-half innings, but Knox rallied with five runs in the sixth. The Prairie Fire added a run to make it an 8-7 deficit, but in the eighth, Grinnell tacked on four runs and added three in the ninth.Â
Miles Hoops drove in two runs while Thomas Wilmot had three hits. Andrew Garrett had a pair of hits, scored three runs, drove in a run, and was on base five times.Â
Looking ahead, the teams meet again on Sunday in Grinnell. Knox then visits Augustana in Rock Island on Monday.
