The Prairie Fire softball team continued its road swing Sunday, ending its four-game, two-day trip with a doubleheader split against Beloit.
Knox (6-16, 1-5) was able to claim the second game of the double-dip, 9-8, after dropping the opener 9-0.
In the victory, Knox had a quick start, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Kylie Thomson started the scoring, singling home Cheyanne Merkel, who tripled to start the rally. Brenlie Bartlett then picked up an RBI, singling home Thomson. Kara Burwell kept the good vibes going as she plated Taylor Goudschaal for a 3-0 lead. Chelsea McKee capped the inning with a single to score Bartlett.
After Beloit got a run back in the bottom of the first, the Prairie Fire tacked on two runs in the second. Thomson had another big swing as she double-plated Maddie Hicks and Merkel for a 6-1 lead.
Knox added another run in the third, as McKee crossed the plate on Hicks's sacrifice fly. The Prairie Fire kept pressing, pushing the lead to 9-3 in the fourth, fueled by Burwell's two-run double that drove in Lauren O'Neill and Bartlett.
From there, Knox needed to hold on. Beloit chipped away at the lead until it was just 9-8 in the final inning. Ultimately, Janet Lentini recorded the last out with the tying run at second, sealing the victory for the Prairie Fire.Â
Thomson and Burwell each had three RBI for Knox in the win. Merkel, Thomson, Bartlett, Burwell, McKee, and Lentini each collected two hits.Â
In the opener, Beloit turned a 2-0 lead into a 9-0 deficit for the Prairie Fire with a seven-run fourth inning. The Prairie Fire managed three hits in the contest.
Knox is next in action on Wednesday, hosting Eureka in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
