Inspired by the overwhelming support and affection from the Knox College community for retiring Head Strength & Conditioning Coach Andy Gibbons, the Prairie Fire Athletic Department has some exciting updates to share regarding its summer schedule.
In honor of Coach Gibbons and his remarkable impact on Knox alums, current student athletes, staff, and supporters, this weekend of May 15 and 16 is serving as the department's annual summer gathering in place of the yearly golf outing, as the department is hosting a retirement celebration for Coach Gibbons.
"As we looked ahead to our summer calendar, it became clear this season would be a uniquely meaningful season for our community. Andy Gibbons' retirement celebration was scheduled just a few weeks before our traditional golf outing and quickly gained momentum," Knox College Director of Athletics Justin Newell said. "Many of our regular golf outing participants shared they were already planning to travel in for Andy's event. With that in mind, we decided to postpone our annual golf outing so people would not have to make the trip twice. "
Andy Gibbons' Retirement Celebration luncheon will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 16th. For those who arrive early, you are welcome to celebrate with Andy at Reserve Artisan Ales Friday, May 15, from 7-9 p.m.Â
Looking ahead, the Prairie Fire Athletic Department is also excited to share that in the coming days we will be announcing a special Chicago-based event as part of our Venture Boldly: Athletic Leadership Series.
This special evening will take place on Friday, June 12 at the Sunset Ridge Country Club and will feature special guest speakers, Prairie Fire connections, and a continued focus on the role athletics plays in a modern liberal arts education. More details and additional dates will be announced soon.
We hope that you find a way to join us this summer as we celebrate legacy, strengthen connections and look ahead - together.
