Lake Forest College used a suffocating defense to spoil Knox College's Midwest Conference opener Saturday afternoon.
The Foresters, coming off a 2-1 overtime loss at North Central College in their first match of the season three days ago, looked sharp in knocking off the Prairie Fire 4-0 at Jorge Prats Field.
Lake Forest outshot the Prairie Fire (0-2, 0-1 MWC) 24-8 in the match, including a 16-3 edge over the final 45 minutes. The Foresters kept Knox sophomore goal keeper Robert Porter (Tuscon, Arizona) busy, sending 17 shots his way.
Lake Forest (1-1, 1-0 MWC) scored its first goal, a kick from the left side by first-year player Nicholas Kliminski, 11:28 into the contest. An unassisted score by junior Nelson Dorvlo at the 40:12 mark of the match put his team up 2-0 at the half.
The Prairie Fire managed just five shots on goal, three of them by sophomore Donald Tchopya (San Francisco, California). Porter finished the afternoon with 13 saves for Knox.
Knox is struggling early on to find the back of the net with just one goal on 34 shot attempts.
Seniors Jacob Heaps and Will Press scored the Foresters' second half goals. Both came in the 60th minute of the match.
Knox has another chance to get into the win column Sunday with a third straight home match, a non-conference contest against Franklin College. The Grizzlies (1-0-1) will pose a tough challenge for the Prairie Fire after winning on the road Saturday against a familiar foe, Eureka College, 6-0.
Eureka beat Knox 4-1 on Wednesday in the season opener for both squads.
