The Prairie Fire women's golf team is improving with each meet.
Knox, playing in its third tournament in less than a week, placed fifth out of six teams September 13 in the Illinois College Midweek Invitational at the Links Golf Course in Jacksonville, Illinois.
The Prairie Fire, after opening the season with a team score of 444 in the Knox College Invitational on September 9, followed with a 432 the next day in the Fighting Scots Invitational. Both one-round tournaments were played at Gibson Woods Golf Course in Monmouth.
Knox shaved 10 strokes off its team score at IC by shooting a season-best 422. The Prairie Fire finished 19 shots ahead of sixth place MacMurray College.
The University of Illinois at Springfield won the team title with a 325, 22 strokes ahead of runner-up Lincoln College. McKendree University placed third in the team standings with a score of 360.
Junior Mia Savard (Menifee, California) put together her lowest round of the season. She carded a 91 to finish 15th individually. Savard previously shot a pair of 99s in the Prairie Fire's first two tournaments and brought her season average down to 96.3.
Illinois-Springfield had the top two finishers: Paige Luker with a 4-over par 76 and Caitlin Fox's 9-over 81.
Sophomore Sarah Martin (Crown Point, Indiana) also finished in the top 25. Martin's 108 -- an eight stroke improvement from the last tournament -- was a season-best score that placed her 25th individually. Sophomore Lizzy Rodgers (Homewood, Illinois) followed at 109 and Junior Monica Price (Rochester, Illinois) shot a 114.
The Prairie Fire continues tournament play September 23-24 in the Central College Invitational in Pella, Iowa.
