Women's Golf Team Places Sixth at MWC

Savard places 19th to lead Prairie Fire

Midwest Conference Women’s Golf Championship

The Prairie Fire concluded the fall women’s golf season with a sixth place finish in the Midwest Conference.

The golfers played a full 18 holes in the third round after getting in nine holes in each of the first two rounds.  Knox shot a 423 on Sunday and finished with a score of 855.

Senior Mia Savard (Menifee, CA, Paloma Valley) fired a solid 89 in round three for the Prairie Fire.  She ended with a total score of 188 and finished in 19th place individually.  Junior Sarah Martin (Crown Point, IN, Merrillville) tied for 26th place after shooting a 104 in the third round and 203 overall.  Senior Monica Price (Rochester, IL, Rochester) carded a 107 on Sunday and a 222 in the tournament.  Junior Lizzy Rodgers (Homewood, IL, Homewood-Flossmoor) had a 123 to wind up at 242.

Carroll University won the team title after shooting a team-best 342 in the third round and 692 overall.  Grinnell College placed second at 702, Monmouth College was third with a 715, Illinois College placed fourth with a 777, and St. Norbert College followed in fifth place at 783.

Carroll’s Morgan Zuleger won the individual title with a three round score of 169.  Grinnell’s Mallory Messin was the runner-up with a 172 and Carroll’s Autumn Neuhring placed third at 173.

Monmouth College's Molly McNamara was named the Midwest Conference Women's Golf Coach of the Year.

>Round 2 October 6

The Prairie Fire followed an opening round score of 211 with a second round 221 to finish the day at 432 and in sixth place.

The golfers, like on Friday, played nine holes on Saturday.  They started the tournament on the front nine and played the back nine in round two.

Each team, with the exception of Carroll University, shot higher scores in the second round.  Carroll jumped from third place after the first round into a tie for the lead with Monmouth College.  The Pioneers shot a second round score of 172 after a 178 in the first round to tie the Fighting Scots at 350.  Monmouth shot just the opposite of Carroll.

Grinnell College is only two shots back in third place at 352.  Illinois College is fourth at 400, followed by St. Norbert College at 407 and the Prairie Fire with a 432.

Leading the way for Knox are senior Mia Savard (Menifee, CA, Paloma Valley) and junior Sarah Martin (Crown Point, IN, Merrillville), both of whom are at 99 going into the third and final round.  Martin carded a second round 49 after opening with a 50.  Savard, after a first round 46 that had her in 14th place individually, shot a 53 in the second round.

Savard and Martin are tied for 24th on the individual leaderboard.

Senior Monica Price (Rochester, IL, Rochester) carded a 58 in the second round and is at 115.  Junior Lizzy Rodgers (Homewood, IL, Homewood-Flossmoor) followed her 58 on Friday with a 61 on Saturday for a score of 119.

Knox will try to improve on the final day of the fall season during Sunday’s third round.

The weather was not kind to the golfers in the opening round of the Midwest Conference Championship.

The round was limited to the front nine holes.  Round two will also be nine holes – the back nine.

The Prairie Fire has work to do after shooting a team score of 211 and finishing in sixth place out of six teams.  Knox is still well within reach of both fifth place St. Norbert College (201) and fourth place Illinois College (198).

Monmouth College leads after shooting 172.  Grinnell College is just one stroke off the pace at 173, followed by Carroll University (178) in third place.

Senior Mia Savard (Menifee, CA, Paloma Valley) led the Prairie Fire with a 46.  She’s currently in 14th place individually.  Junior Sarah Martin (Crown Point, IN, Merrillville) carded a 50 to tie her for 24th place.

Mallory Messin of Grinnell shot a 40 and leads by two strokes over Breanne Ford and Hannah Long, both of Monmouth.

Also looking to move up for the Prairie Fire are senior Monica Price (Rochester, IL, Rochester) and junior Lizzy Rodgers (Homewood, IL, Homewood-Flossmoor).  Price shot a 57 and Rodgers a 58 in the first round.

The golfers are scheduled to begin the second round Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
