Women's Golf 14th at Millikin Fall Invitational

Decatur, IL – The women’s golf had a much better second round but didn’t move up in the team standings between rounds in the Millikin Fall Classic.

The Prairie Fire shot a 416 in the opening round on Saturday at Red Tail Run Golf Course, 18 strokes behind 13th place Kaskaskia Community College. Knox responded with a season-best 18-hole score of 391 in round two to finish the tournament in 14th place with an 807.

Kaskaskia, which carded a 398 on Saturday and began the second round in 13th place, finished in the same spot in the team standings after a 400 on Sunday and a 798 overall. 

The 15th team in the tournament was Lindenwood University.

All four Knox golfers improved on their first round scores.  Senior Mia Savard (Menifee, CA, Paloma Valley), who carded an 88 in the first round, followed with an 84 for a two-day total of 172.  She finished in a tie for 28th place individually.

Junior Sarah Martin (Crown Point, IN, Merrillville) shaved three strokes off her first round total with a second round 100.  Senior Monica Price (Rochester, IL, Rochester) was six strokes better on Sunday with a 101 and junior Lizzy Rodgers (Homewood, IL, Homewood-Flossmoor) finished at 106 in the second round following a first round score of 118.

Washington University of St. Louis won the team title.  The Bears combined to shoot a tournament best 301 in round two for a two-day total of 617.  Illinois Wesleyan University was a distant 30 strokes behind Wash U. in second place. 

Monmouth College placed ninth in the team standings (728) and Illinois College finished 11th (770).

Olivia Lugar of Wash U. won a one-hole playoff to claim the individual title.  She and Gabbi Schuerman of host Millikin University each shot a 149 to force the playoff.

The Prairie Fire plays in one more regular season event this fall before the Midwest Conference Women’s Golf Championships.  Knox takes part in the Grinnell College Invitational on September 29.

The conference championships are October 5 through 7 in Springfield, Illinois.
