Grinnell, IA – The Prairie Fire’s four-match streak without a loss came to an end on Saturday against Grinnell College.
The Pioneers (4-5-1, 2-2-0) defeated Knox (5-4-1, 1-2-1) 4-1 in a Midwest Conference contest between the two teams.
The win was the third in the last four matches for Grinnell while Knox lost for the first time since a 2-1 overtime setback at Ripon College on September 15. The Prairie Fire came into the contest with three straight victories.
Grinnell got off to a quick start by scoring three goals in the first 30:00 of the match to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission.
The Pioneers extended the lead to 4-0 with their final goal of the match at the 64:20 mark. The Prairie Fire was credited with an own goal at 80:03 to account for the final scoring.
Grinnell got off 17 shots to four for Knox. First-year Sean McGovern (Chicago, IL, Niles Notre Dame) had four saves in goal for the Prairie Fire in the loss.
Knox will try to string together another winning streak beginning October 2 when Illinois College (5-5-2, 0-3-1) visits Jorge Prats Field for a Midwest Conference match. The Blueboys have dropped three in a row, including back-to-back shutouts. IC’s last goal came in a 2-1 loss at Grinnell College on September 22.
The teams are scheduled to square off at 3:30 p.m. after the completion of the women’s match.
