Waukesha, WI – Carroll University scored late in regulation and downed the Prairie Fire 1-0 in an important Midwest Conference match for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

Carroll (10-4-1, 6-1 MWC), the Midwest Conference Tournament champion last season, scored the only goal of the match against Knox at the 87:02 mark.  The win was the third straight for the Pioneers after dropping a 1-0 decision against Lake Forest College at home on October 9.

The Prairie Fire (12-4, 5-2 MWC) played virtually even with the Pioneers, who were picked to finish second in the 2013 MWC preseason coaches' poll, the entire match.

Carroll held a 6-3 advantage in total shots before the intermission.  Both teams took four shots after the break and shots on goal in the contest was even at 4-4 before Caden Pruitt scored what turned out to be the game-winner with just under 3:00 remaining in regulation.

Sophomore Charlie Harned (Webster Groves, MO, Clayton) took three of the seven shots by Knox, two of them stopped by Pioneer keeper Tomek Miaskowski.

Junior Sean Dockrell (Dublin, Ireland, San Bernadino CC) had four saves in goal for the Prairie Fire.

Carroll remains in second place in the Midwest Conference standings with 18 points, three points behind leader Lake Forest (10-6, 7-1 MWC) – a 3-0 winner at home against Monmouth College on Saturday.

St. Norbert College (7-7-2, 6-2 MWC) earned three conference points to match Carroll's 18 by beating Cornell College on Saturday.

Knox is tied with resurgent Grinnell College in the fourth slot in the standings with 15 conference points each.  The Pioneers (7-9, 5-3 MWC) have won three straight to claw back into the race for a spot in the conference tournament next month.  The Prairie Fire topped Grinnell 2-1 in OT at home on October 5.

The Prairie Fire need to win their remaining two matches, both Midwest Conference road contests, to stay in the running for berth in the MWC Tournament.

The first of those two matches is at Beloit College on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.  The Buccaneers (0-12-2, 0-6-1) played Illinois College to a scoreless tie on Saturday to snap a 12-match losing streak.
